The psychology of knowing what needs to change — and choosing not to change it
There is a particular kind of stuck that has nothing to do with not knowing what to do. The person in front of you can name the problem precisely. They can describe the decision they need to make, the conversation they need to have, the habit they need to break. What they cannot do — for months, sometimes for years — is act on it. This isn’t ignorance. It’s something else, and it has a name in several different psychological traditions, each of which sees a different part of it clearly.
