Belonging: A Crucial Topic for SUPERvision Conference
Belonging is an increasingly relevant theme for a SUPERvision conference, especially in today’s rapidly changing world. As societies become more diverse and interconnected, the sense of belonging becomes critical for individual well-being and collective harmony. According to research by Stanford University, the feeling of belonging can significantly impact mental health, productivity, and engagement levels. People who feel they belong are more likely to contribute positively to their communities and workplaces, driving innovation and collaboration.
In a world where remote work and digital interactions are becoming the norm, fostering a sense of belonging has become more challenging and essential. Harvard Business Review notes that in workplaces where belonging is prioritized, there is a 56% increase in job performance and a 50% reduction in turnover risk. This demonstrates how vital it is for organizations to cultivate environments where everyone feels valued and included.
Additionally, belonging is closely tied to equity and justice. As highlighted by the World Economic Forum, creating inclusive communities helps break down systemic barriers and promotes social justice. Addressing belonging at the SUPERvision conference allows for a deeper exploration of how to build inclusive spaces that support the diverse needs of individuals, paving the way for a more just and connected world.
The psychological impact of belonging cannot be overstated. Research has shown that individuals who experience a strong sense of belonging report higher levels of well-being, self-esteem, and life satisfaction (Baumeister & Leary, 1995). In contrast, a lack of belonging can lead to feelings of isolation, anxiety, and depression. For leaders, L&D, OD professionals, and consultants, understanding the psychological impact of belonging is crucial for creating supportive environments that promote mental health and well-being.
Team, Organisations, Communities and Belonging
Belonging is a fundamental human need that significantly impacts individuals’ experiences and performances within organizations. SUPERvision that emphasizes reflection, guidance and support in professional settings—plays a pivotal role in cultivating environments where belonging is prioritised. From an organizational perspective, belonging is associated with numerous benefits. Employees who feel a sense of belonging are more engaged, motivated, and committed to their work (Allen et al., 2015). They are also more likely to collaborate effectively, share knowledge, and contribute to innovation. Moreover, organizations that prioritize belonging tend to have lower turnover rates and higher levels of employee retention, leading to cost savings and improved performance (Goler et al., 2018).
Some thinking on SUPERvision for Professionals 1:1 and in Group Formats
As Clutterbuck et al, (2016) share “… the practice of reflecting on your client work. If we focus on the element of “vison”, then this highlights the fact that the activity enhances your ability to “see” your work from an expanded perspective. By examining how you practice, you can illuminate the subtle choices you make in client conversations. Through reflection it becomes possible to celebrate your strengths, uncover your blind spots and explore the potential for unconscious bias.”
SUPERvision has been required in caring professions for many years and is now seen by the main coaching professional bodies as an either essential or desirable part of ongoing professional coach development. It is viewed as essential to maintain, sustain, and evolve good practice. Reports show that, as a method of self-reflection for coaches, SUPERvision came in fifth place behind private reflection, reading, research and peer networking (EMCC, 2017). Our initial research shares that this is changing and its benefits for any professional are just starting to be considred. of course further research is needed in this area.
SUPERvision can help in regulating the profession and safeguarding standards.
SUPER means over and above, of high grade or quality, a term of approval, and powerful (Merriam-Webster, 2001). Then the ‘vision’ part – an idea or mental image of something, the ability to imagine how something could develop in the future, the ideas that come from imagining. (Cambridge Dictionary, 2021) It combines so much including philosophy, cognitive process, existentialism, profound emotions, values and purpose, sometimes unnatural, or atypical insight and topics are presented plus emotional and somatic awareness. This is what SUPERvisees have fed back to us over the years.
The concept of belonging and METAvision fits well. The reflective space, suitable challenge, benchmarking, considering the business of business, resourcing, and a supportive environment enables SUPERvisees and SUPERvisors to consider the effects of their actions – in leadership meetings, coaching sessions with Coachees, organisational development (OD)… in the moment, retrospectively and preframing to support actions being more considered and conscious. This META element enhances transcending as well as hard focus upon social, political, cultural, geography, class, identity and other phenomena, as well as reflecting upon all layers of relationships and SUPERvision processes.
META originates from the Greek prefix and preposition meta, meaning ‘after’ or ‘beyond’. When used in English, combined with other words, it often signifies ‘change’ or ‘alteration’ as in the words metamorphic or metabolic. (Dictionary.com)
Isn’t that perfect for this important work as we explore and grow our strengths, just as we identify and consider, then shift our development areas in service of our client work?
