About the programme
The Leader as Coach programme is designed to not only enhance a leader’s coaching capabilities but to transform the way leaders think and operate across all sectors globally. This course goes beyond teaching the mechanics of coaching; it empowers leaders with the strategic insight to know when and how a coaching approach can drive meaningful change, elevate team performance, and lead with integrity and ethics in complex environments. It’s about integrating coaching into the broader leadership framework, helping leaders make more informed, ethical, and impactful decisions.
Delivered by world-class executive coaches with extensive senior leadership experience, the programme blends cutting-edge coaching theory with real-world applications. Leaders will be guided to make powerful connections between theory and their own leadership practice, building the confidence to lead more effectively through coaching. With a focus on global leadership challenges, the programme equips leaders to navigate the demands of diverse industries and cultures, enabling them to create lasting impact in their organisations and beyond.
Programme structure
Leader as Coach is delivered across a three-month period, with taught days interspersed with individual coaching practice. The course includes pre-reading and assessment. Taught sessions are highly interactive with leaders expected to contribute actively throughout the course.
With appropriate support provided, leaders are also required to self-manage their coaching practice throughout the course to ensure integration of their learning into their leadership practice.
The course is made up of 4 days of workshops plus one day of Assessment across three months (usually 3 +2 or 4 + 1) and in between the live in person or live online sessions our team of highly experiences internal and external master coaches will be available to provide online support, mentor coaching and supervision.
Day One: Coaching as a Leadership Skill
The first day defines coaching in the leadership context, assessing how and when it might be the most appropriate intervention. Leaders will develop an appreciation of how to apply a non-judgemental approach to development and the value of a non-directive intervention in supporting personal responsibility in decision making that takes account of power dynamics. Throughout the course there will be a clear emphasis on the ethics of coaching in the workplace. Together we focus on powerful questioning, active listening – beyond words, and simple diagnostics.
Day Two: Core skills of the Coaching Leader
Day two focuses on developing coaching skills and knowledge. Leaders will learn how to manage the coaching conversation process without directing the content, understand ways to deal with ethical issues such as conflicts of interest and confidentiality as well as ways to manage coaching projects. We will also be exploring ways to hold the coaching space, managing our own responses and using intuition.
Day Three: Learning from Experience
We will explore the importance of personal reflection in learning and working with limiting beliefs. Leaders will become familiar with some of the tools and techniques that can be applied in the coaching context and appreciate the importance of language.
Further opportunity for coaching practice between taught days.
Day Four: Developing coaching capability
Leaders will gain an understanding of some potential challenges that could arise when using a more holistic coaching approach to developmental conversations. We will learn how to integrate and take coaching skills forward as a leader and to build a coaching culture. We will also explore coaching in a systemic approach, using creative, AI and communicative tools in person and online for coaching, how to reflect on practice, ways to coach groups, how to assess the impact/return on investment of coaching and ways to report on coaching projects.
You will also be coached by one of our master certified coaches / master practitioners.
Coaching practice
To gain the most benefit from this course, leaders are expected to recruit several volunteers to coach during the course and to have more than one session with each volunteer. Here you will also reflect upon your coaching be it informal or formal session, 1:1, group or with teams/boards.
Progression Routes:
This programme leads into our intermediate ‘deep dives’ into coaching modalities and techniques which is a further 2.5 days (or 16 hours) providing leaders with an Association for Coaching International (AC) Diploma in Coaching following assessment.
A further 3 days (21 hours) will enable leaders to apply for the Associate Certified Coach credential with the International Coaching Federation (ICF). The focus at this level is on executive, team and board coaching specifically.
